Sir Terence Rattigan,(1911 – 1977) was one of England’s most popular mid twentieth century dramatists. His plays are typically set in an upper-middle-class background. Panned on its debut in 1958, his update of La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, was set amidst the glamorous and exotic society of the 1950’s French Riviera. Also known as Variation on a Theme it revolves around the tempestuous love affair between Rose, a beautiful and worldly socialite and Ron, a young bisexual ballet dancer with a keen eye on advancement.
